Terry's Supermarkets History

Now one of the leading independent grocery store chains in North Texas, Terry's Supermarket had its' humble beginnings in Grand Prairie, TX in 1995 when Owner and President Mr. Yu purchased the store from Jerry's Supermarket. Terry's Supermarkets has had a history of rapid expansion, in 14 years opening 14 stores.

 

Quickly gaining momentum after opening the Grand Prairie store in 1995, Store #2 - Illinois in Dallas opened its doors in 1997. The company gained recognition and grew faster than expected. Mr. Yu realized the Hispanic market was seriously underserved. The company spread out to more heavily Hispanic populated areas such as Fort Worth and Mesquite , quickly adding 3 more stores from 1999 to 2001. Attached to the Mesquite store was a warehouse used for distribution to other stores, which allowed for more bulk buying and lower prices for our customers.

 

Looking for a new venture, Terry's Supermarkets opened its' first convenience store and gas station in Dallas on Webb Chapel in 2002. The risk proved profitable and our customer base increased. As popularity grew, the convenience store expanded to include more grocery items, meat and produce departments.

 

The next piece of real estate Mr. Yu set his target on was an old K-mart store in Lewisville . It was renovated and converted to grocery store #7 and a bazaar or marketplace for merchants to rent space and set up shop. You can even plan your next event at the Terry's Ballroom which comfortably holds up to 400 people for company meetings, conferences, and other celebrations such as quince ñ eras (15 th Birthday), weddings and graduations. Visit the doctor's clinic, also inside the store, to add to your one-stop-shop convenience. The 20,000 sq. ft. building transformed into a variety of services available to Terry's Supermarkets customers as of 2004.

 

As the company prepared for this strategic move, operations became more centralized and a 100,000 sq. ft. distribution center opened in 2006. TSM Distribution became Terry's Supermarkets Corporate Office. By then, there was enough space for larger purchases; therefore 2 more stores were opened in Irving and Plano . The stores competed with major players in the grocery industry and constantly improved their market share. At this point, there was a much larger goal in mind, to expand beyond the Dallas / Fort Worth area.

 

The next expansion phase took Terry's Supermarket to a new state and with a new name. Under the new label, ‘ El Mariachi Supermercado ,' the doors to 2 grocery stores, #10 and #11, in Oklahoma City opened in 2007 and 2009. Oklahomans quickly accepted El Mariachi with a warm welcome. Business Writer, Trisha Evans, said it best, “ When El Mariachi Supermercado opens …it probably will be the only place in Oklahoma where one can buy pickled cactus, pick out a pi ñ ata and visit the doctor's office all in one stop.” (The Oklahoman Newspaper, 2007)

 

The year 2008 was full of opportunities and acquisitions. With assistance of Grocers Supply, Terry's Supermarkets acquired 3 stores from Carnival Food Stores located in Irving #12, Dallas -12 th Street #13 and Waxahachie #14. The transition was handled with great care and thought and the decision was made to close the Irving store #8 to concentrate our efforts in one area of Irving .

 

Mr. Yu anticipated his next move to Duncanville , to the inauguration of store #15 in October 2009. The results have been overwhelmingly positive. Everyone's efforts and dedication is evident in how well the stores are thriving. The company is very pleased with future prospects. Look for a Terry's Supermarkets coming to a neighborhood near you!
